In the month of August 2100, a gateway to a parallel universe that came to be known as the "Gate" suddenly appeared in Ginza, which is located in Tokyo. The retail district was quickly transformed into a horrific inferno as armies of monsters and soldiers emerged from the portal. The Japan Ground-Self Defense Force repelled the fantastical beings and drove them back through the "Gate" as soon as they were alerted. The JGSDF sent the Third Reconnaissance Team to the "Special Region" on the other side of the Gate in order to improve the chances of successful negotiations and to get themselves ready for upcoming battles. Youji Itami, a 33-year-old otaku who also serves as an officer in the JSDF, was selected to take over as the commander of the Team. The crew went to several different locations and learned a lot about the local culture as well as the terrain while they were under attack from enemy troops. In spite of the challenges they had along the way, thanks to their efforts in humanitarian relief, they were eventually able to make contact with the residents of the area. Within their group of fresh acquaintances, they counted among their number a lovable elf, a sorceress, and a demigoddess. On the other hand, significant countries located outside the Gate, such as the United States of America, China, and Russia, had a strong interest in the Special Region due to the vast amounts of resources that were available there. They started applying pressure on Japan through diplomatic channels. A suddenly appearing portal to some unknown realm might not be much more than a useful tool for the great countries in the globe to use in their efforts to overthrow the existing international order. But for our main characters, it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to widen not only their education but also their friendships and, eventually, their view on the wider world.
