Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty rules China in the early eleventh century, when the film is set. State matters are neglected and personal pleasures are indulged while official corruption grows, and war rages on the Song Dynasty frontiers. Army of Western Xia is marching into Song Dynasty territory. Among the Yang family of generals, Yang Zongbao is the last man standing, having spent his entire life to the defense of the Song Dynasty against foreign invasion. Due to the treachery of the Imperial tutor Pang, it appears that he dies in battle tragically. Mu Guiying, Yang Zongbao's bereaved wife, leads the other widows of the Yang clan into combat to carry on their husbands' legacy.
