At Christmastime, Joseph Harris, a famed but troubled playwright, arrives in a small Michigan town to stage his latest play. A young, aspiring writer greets the jaded New Yorker, challenging his literary idol to be the icon he'd hoped for. Harris has no desire to be a hero to the young man, nor does he want to be a part of Michigan or its small-town theater. Harris makes preparations to return to New York on the next train out as soon as he arrives.
