Jim and his daughter Veronica, a young high school music teacher, seek to decipher their entangled history and secrets. Jim's daughter is wrongfully convicted of misusing her position of responsibility over Clive, age 17, after an elaborate deception backfires. Veronica is sure, despite this, that she merits punishment, but for far older offenses. Jim's grief begins to interfere with his work as a food inspector as a result of Veronica's stubbornness. He exerts immense control over small family-owned restaurants, which he uses without hesitation.
