37

37 people in Queens, New York, were present on a March night in 1964 when Kitty Genovese was savagely murdered. They don't do anything or report anything to the authorities. There are several of these persons who are profiled in 37, along with the events that led up to the night when they stayed unresponsive observers. This is a convincing representation of a changing borough and the time of the Civil Rights Movement and political upheavals shown in the film. America's loss of innocence is symbolized by the actual event that inspired the film's premise. In her feature film debut, filmmaker Puk Grasten takes us on a tour of an apartment complex that eventually succumbs to a collective failure while weaving together individual destiny, dreams, and family disputes.
