It was written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and stars Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale as inmates in the fictional Cumberland HMP Slade. "Doing porridge" is British slang meaning serving a prison sentence, as porridge was formerly the standard prison breakfast. Going Straight, which was released in 1978, established that Fletcher would never return to prison. In a BBC survey of the 100 greatest British sitcoms from 2004, Porridge was ranked seventh.
