Porridge

From 1974 to 1977, BBC1 aired the British situation comedy Porridge, which ran for three seasons, two Christmas specials, and a feature film with the same name. It was written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and stars Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale as inmates in the fictional Cumberland HMP Slade. "Doing porridge" is British slang meaning serving a prison sentence, as porridge was formerly the standard prison breakfast. Going Straight, which was released in 1978, established that Fletcher would never return to prison. In a BBC survey of the 100 greatest British sitcoms from 2004, Porridge was ranked seventh.
