Lawman is an American western television series that aired on ABC from 1958 to 1962, with John Russell as Marshal Dan Troop and Peter Brown as Deputy Marshal Johnny McKay. In 1879 and the 1880s, the series took place in Laramie, Wyoming. Cheyenne, starring Clint Walker, debuted in1955, when Warner Bros. already had a number of western series on the air. In1957, the company added Maverick starring James Garner and Jack Kelly, Colt.45 starring Wayde Preston, and Sugarfoot starring Will Hutchcraft to continue the trend. Warner Bros. added Ty Hardin to Lawman and Bronco the following year. Before filming began, Russell and Brown, together with producer Jules Schermer, formed a covenant to preserve the quality of the series so that it would not be viewed as "just another western." Peggie Castle joined Russell and Brown as Lily Merrill, the Birdcage Saloon's proprietor and Dan's love interest, towards the beginning of the second season.
