Peter Benchley produced the syndication television show Amazon. It was created by Alliance Atlantis Communications & WIC Entertainment in Canada and Beta Film GmbH in Germany. The series' 22 episodes aired in first-run syndication between 1999 and 2000. The drama series followed the six survivors of a plane crash in the Brazilian Amazon jungle. The group soon comes into contact with a Native American tribe, and things do not go well. The gang is taken in by a mystery tribe descended from lost 16th century British colonists in the Amazon. Relationships with the Chosen are shaky at best. The majority of the gang escapes the Chosen, only to stir up a hornet's nest with a band of cannibals lead by a psychotic American woman set on dominating all nearby tribes. The first season ended on a cliffhanger, and there was no second season. The series remained popular enough that it was released on DVD in 2011. Rob MacGregor wrote a novelization of the 2-hour pilot, which was published by Harper on August 8, 2000. Amazonas-Gefangene des Dschungels was the German title.
