In filmmaker D.W. Griffith's controversial Civil War epic, two families, abolitionist Northerners the Stonemans and Southern landowners the Camerons, interweave. Nurse Elsie Stoneman appeals for Confederate colonel Ben Cameron's pardon after he is captured in combat.
