The Birth of a Nation

In filmmaker D.W. Griffith's controversial Civil War epic, two families, abolitionist Northerners the Stonemans and Southern landowners the Camerons, interweave. Nurse Elsie Stoneman appeals for Confederate colonel Ben Cameron's pardon after he is captured in combat. Cameron founds the Ku Klux Klan in Reconstruction-era South Carolina, challenging Elsie's congressman father and his African-American protégé, Silas Lynch.
