You Can't Do That on Television

You Can't Do That on Television is a Canadian television show that premiered in Canada in 1979 and then went international in 1981. It was a sketch comedy that utilized pre-teen and adolescent actors. Each episode featured a different theme. Many actors and writers, including Alanis Morissette and Bill Prady, would go on to create and produce shows including The Big Bang Theory, Gilmore Girls, and Dharma and Greg, as a result of their roles on the show. The show was created by CTV station CJOH-TV in Ottawa, and it broadcast on that station. The show aired in reruns on Nickelodeon until 1994, when it was replaced by the comparable All That. Nick's show was incredibly popular at the time, with the channel's highest overall ratings. The episode is also credited for establishing the network's signature slime. You Can't Do That on Film, a 2004 feature-length documentary directed by David Dillehunt, is based on the program.
