To Catch a Predator

To Catch a Predator is an American reality television series produced by Dateline NBC that incorporates hidden camera investigations. It was dedicated to impersonating minors and detaining male adults who contacted them for sexual liaisons via the Internet. People were enticed to meet with a decoy under the guise of sexual intimacy, only to be challenged. In an interview with NPR News, show presenter Chris Hansen stated that these persons should be classed as potential sexual predators rather than pedophiles. "Pedophiles are people who are interested in prepubescent sex," he explained. The series debuted in November 2004 and featured a total of 12 investigations held across the United States. The investigations were carried out as undercover sting operations with the assistance of the online watchdog organization Perverted-Justice. Since the third episode, police enforcement and other officials have become involved, resulting in the arrests of the majority of those apprehended. Since December 2007, no new episodes have aired. To Catch a Predator has been aired on NBC stations WTMJ in Milwaukee, KSHB in Kansas City, and WBRE. To Catch a Con Man, To Catch an ID Thief, To Catch a Car Thief, and To Catch an i-Jacker, which featured iPod thieves, were among the spin-offs that aired in the same format. To Catch a Predator airs on FX and Crime & Investigation Network in the United Kingdom, Crime & Investigation Network in Australia and New Zealand, and FOX Crime in Portugal.
