The State

The State is a sketch-comedy show that aired on MTV from December17,1993, through July1, 1995. The show's unusual characters and circumstances captivated over teenagers. Eleven twentysomethings conceived, acted, wrote, directed, and edited the program. Catchphrases from the show's memorable characters briefly gained common usage. The cast often appeared as themselves to promote false contests or spoof PSAs. Like Monty Python, The State's sketches occasionally led into each other with a punchline or picture. After years of legal challenges, the series was released on DVD on July14, 2009. A State film starring all of the original troupe members is in the process, but its release date has not been disclosed.
