The Penguins of Madagascar is a Nickelodeon CGI animated television series. It stars nine characters from the DreamWorks Animation animated film Madagascar: the penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico; the lemurs King Julien, Maurice, and Mort; and the chimps Mason and Phil. Marlene the otter and Alice, a zookeeper, are two new characters to the series. It's the first Nicktoon created in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation. On November29,2008, a pilot episode called "Gone in a Flash" premiered as part of "Superstuffed Nicktoons Weekend," and The Penguins of Madagascar became a regular series on March28, 2009. The series premiere received 6.1 million people, setting a new record for the most-watched debut. Although the series occasionally nods to the rest of the franchise, The Penguins of Madagascar does not take place at a certain moment within it. McGrath, who also co-created the film characters, has stated that the series takes place in "I didn't care if it was before or after the movie; I just wanted them all back in the zoo. It occurs in a parallel reality, in my opinion."
