The show is about Ryan Atwood, a troubled kid from a broken home who is taken in by Sandy and Kirsten Cohen, who are rich and kind. Ryan and Seth, a socially awkward but smart teen who acts as Ryan's surrogate brother, deal with life as outsiders in the rich world of Newport Beach. Ryan and Seth spend a lot of time figuring out their relationships with Marissa Cooper, the girl next door, Summer Roberts, Seth's childhood crush, and Taylor Townsend, a fast-talking loner. In the stories, the idealistic Cohen family and the shallow, materialistic, and closed-minded town where they live are at odds with each other. The show is a mix of melodrama and comedy, with some elements of postmodernism.
