"The Knick" takes place in the heart of New York City in the year 1900 and focuses on the Knickerbocker Hospital and the pioneering surgeons, nurses, and staff members who work there. These individuals push the boundaries of medicine at a time when mortality rates were astonishingly high and there were no antibiotics. Despite the fact that he has a hidden cocaine addiction, John Thackery is a talented surgeon who is developing innovative new approaches in the area. Dr. Everett Gallinger, the young Dr. Bertie Chickering Jr., and Dr. Algernon Edwards, a bright surgeon who has recently been pushed upon him are all members of the medical team that he directs. Cornelia Robertson, the daughter of the hospital's benefactor, Captain August Robertson; Tom Cleary, the grumpy ambulance driver; Lucy Elkins, a young nurse from the country; Herman Barrow, the corrupt administrator of the hospital; and Sister Harriet, a nun who isn't afraid to say what's on her mind are also members of the hospital's colorful cast of characters.
