The Hathaways

The Hathaways is a 26-episode ABC situation comedy that ran from October 6, 1961, to March 30, 1962, and starred Peggy Cass and Jack Weston as suburban Los Angeles "parents" to three performing chimps. Weston plays real estate agent Walter Hathaway. Elinore, Cass's wife, is the "mother" and booking agent for the Marquis Chimps, Candy, Charlie, and Enoch. In 1960, the monkeys appeared on CBS's The Ed Sullivan Show and did some advertisements. Character actor Mary Grace Canfield played Mrs. Amanda Allison, a housekeeper; Barbara Perry played Elinore's friend and neighbor, Thelma Brockwood; and Harvey Lembeck played Jerry Roper, the chimps' theatrical agent. Mrs. Harrison, another neighbor, was played by Belle Montrose, the mother of comedian Steve Allen. The first episode is named "Love Thy Neighbor," and it follows the Brockwoods as they decide to buy the house next door despite their worries about having chimps as neighbors as well. Joe Flynn appeared as Freddie Winkler in the third episode of the season, "Walter Takes a Partner," which aired on October 20. In "Candy's Tonsils," Vaughn Taylor portrayed Dr. Dorsey, a veterinarian. In "TV or Not TV," Robert Q. Lewis played Barney Holt. Other episodes included "The Hathaways Sleep Out," "Grandma's Lamp," "TV or Not TV," "The Practical Joker," "Help Wanted," "The Shrewd Trader," "A Man for Amanda," and "Elinore's Best Friend."
