The African penguin is engaged in a life-or-death struggle... Michaela Strachan is on a crusade to assist them at this time. Michaela, the newest member of the SANCCOB chick bolstering team, will be investigating the reasons behind the precipitous decline in the number of penguins as well as the potential solutions to the problem of how to conserve them. Every year, the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) stages a dramatic rescue of hundreds of penguin chicks whose parents have been unable to feed them due to adverse conditions. SANCCOB's goal is to ensure that penguins continue to thrive in their natural habitats. Up to 500 defenseless chicks need to be saved, cared for, and finally taught skills necessary for survival before they can be released back into the wild after a hectic period of six weeks in which all hands are needed to be on deck.
