The Cosby Show

From September 20, 1984, to April 30, 1992, The Cosby Show was an American television situation comedy starring Bill Cosby that aired on NBC for eight seasons. The Huxtable family, an upper-middle-class African-American family from Brooklyn, New York, is the subject of the show. The program "was TV's biggest hit in the 1980s, and nearly single-handedly restored the sitcom genre and NBC's ratings fortunes," according to TV Guide. The sitcom was first pitched to ABC, but it was turned down. According to Entertainment Weekly, The Cosby Show paved the way for a wider range of series featuring people of African origin, from In Living Color to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The Cosby Show was based on Cosby's stand-up routines, which were based on his personal life. That trend would later be followed by other sitcoms including Home Improvement and Everybody Loves Raymond. A Different World, a spin-off of the show, aired for six seasons from 1987 to 1993.
