St. Elsewhere

St. Elsewhere aired on NBC from October 26, 1982 to May 25, 1988. The series starred Ed Flanders, Norman Lloyd, and William Daniels as teaching doctors at a lightly-regarded Boston hospital who helped interns make vital medical and life decisions. The series was produced by MTM Enterprises, which also produced the NBC police drama Hill Street Blues at the same time. Both series were compared for their ensemble casts and serialized stories. St. Elsewhere was filmed at CBS/MTM Studios, which was known as CBS/Fox Studios when the show began; 20th Century Fox acquired the series' rights in the 1990s. St. Elsewhere established a modest but dedicated fanbase during its 6-season, 137-episode run. The series also achieved a good audience in Nielsen's 18-49 age category, a youthful, wealthy audience that TV advertisers are eager to reach. During its tenure, the show won 13 Emmys for writing, acting, and directing. TV Guide ranked St. Elsewhere #20 on its 2002 list of "The 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time." The magazine previously named it the best 1980s drama in a 1993 issue.
