Recess is a Walt Disney Television Animation-produced American animated television series created by Paul Germain and Joe Ansolabehere. The series focuses on the interactions of six elementary school pupils with their peers and teachers. In North American civilization, the term recess refers to the period of time during the school day when students are not in class and are instead playing in the schoolyard. A major aspect of the series is how the students create their own civilization, complete with a government and a class system, against the backdrop of a typical school. In the United States, reruns of Recess ran on Disney Channel from 1997 to 2001. The show originally aired on ABC from 1997 to 2001. The success of the series resulted in its distribution to several nations across the globe, including the United Kingdom, where it ran on multiple networks, including Toon Disney and Disney Channel UK. Recess: School's Out was released theatrically by Walt Disney Pictures in 2001 as the first of two films based on the television series. In the same year, Recess Christmas: Miracle on Third Street was released as a direct-to-video sequel. In 2003, a third film named Recess: Taking the Fifth Grade was released alongside Recess: All Growed Down. Similarly, both were direct-to-video. The characters also appeared in an episode of the Disney television series Lilo & Stitch: The Series.
