Payne is a popular television series in the United States that is based on the popular Fawlty Towers program from the United Kingdom. It starred the American actor John Larroquette, best known for his role as the assistant district attorney Dan Fielding on the television show Night Court, which was produced in the United States. Larroquette served not only as a cast member but also as an executive producer for the series. Payne was a mid-season replacement on CBS that debuted in March and April of1999. The show ran for two months. In addition to JoBeth Williams and Julie Benz, Rick Batalla also appeared on the show at various points. Payne was abruptly canceled despite having received mostly excellent feedback and having the support of John Cleese, who had indicated that he would be willing to have a recurring role if the show was given another season. There were a total of nine episodes produced, however only eight were shown on the show. The show is not currently offered on DVD.
