Out of the Unknown is a science fiction anthology drama series that was produced by the BBC and aired on BBC2 in four seasons between the years 1965 and 1971. The series ran from 1965 through 1971. Every single episode was a play based on a different science fiction short tale. While some were created specifically for the series, the majority of the episodes were retold versions of previously published stories. The stories published during the first three years were all works of science fiction, but during the fourth and final year, the focus shifted to horror and fantasy tales. During the early 1970s, several episodes were removed from circulation because, at the time, this was the regular operating process. There are still a considerable number of episodes that have not been found, although some do surface every so often. For instance, Level Seven from series two, which was initially shown on October 27, 1966, was returned to the BBC from the archives of a European broadcaster in January 2006.
