When young David Balfour comes at his uncle's dreary Scottish home to claim his inheritance, a relative of his makes an attempt on his life and then arranges for him to be transported to the colonies, where he is eventually sold as a slave. The lad's good fortune continues when he forms a friendship with Alan Breck Stewart, who is hiding out after Bonnie Prince Charlie's army was defeated at Culloden. After a ship's captain makes an attempt to kill Breck for his money, Breck and his companion are able to escape to land and make their way to Edinburgh while escaping the merciless Redcoats along the way.
