Jamaica Inn

After the passing of her mother in 1820, the young and energetic Mary is compelled to move in with her Aunt Patience. The setting of the novel is the intimidating background of windswept Cornish moors, and it follows the voyage of Mary as she makes her way through these moors. When Mary visits her Aunt at the remote Jamaica Inn, she finds that the carefree woman she remembers from her childhood has been replaced by a drudge who is completely under the spell of her overbearing husband Joss. However, it is soon discovered that this is really a front; Joss is in fact the head of a smuggling ring, and Jamaica Inn is the epicenter of his so-called "free trade." The rooms at the inn are kept locked and empty because there are no people staying there.
