Dick Hickock, 20, is in prison when he overhears a cellmate's story about an affluent rancher keeping $10,000 in a home safe. When Dick is released, he convinces ex-con Perry Smith, also 20, to assist him in pursuing the stash. Dick and Perry break into Herb Clutter's Holcomb, Kansas, home on a November night in 1959. Enraged at the lack of a safe, they awaken the sleeping family and brutally murder them all. Two buddies who stop by before Sunday church discover the bodies. The murders come as a surprise to the little Great Plains community, where doors are frequently left unlocked.
