I Spy

I Spy is an American television series about a secret agent. It aired on NBC for three seasons from 1965 to 1968 and starred Robert Culp as international tennis player Kelly Robinson and Bill Cosby as his trainer, Alexander Scott. The characters' travels as putative "tennis bums," with Robinson playing brilliant tennis as an amateur with the wealthy in exchange for food and shelter and Scott accompanying them, served as a cover narrative for their jobs as top Pentagon operatives. Their real work frequently kept them busy pursuing crooks, spies, and beautiful women. The show's creators were writers David Friedkin and Morton Fine, as well as cinematographer Fouad Said. They founded Three F Productions under the auspices of Desilu Studios, where the show was produced. Fine and Friedkin co-produced and authored the scripts for 16 episodes, one of which Friedkin directed. Friedkin dabbled with acting and appeared in two episodes of the first season. Sheldon Leonard, widely known for playing gangster roles in the 1940s and 1950s, served as executive producer. He also appeared in two episodes as a gangster villain and in a third as himself in a funny cameo. He also helmed one episode and was an infrequent second-unit director during the series.
