In the beginning of the prequel series, the Targaryen dynasty rules over a total of 15 dragons. Real and fictional empires alike typically fall from such heights. Almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen defies a century of custom by making his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne, the Targaryen family begins its long, steady decline. In contrast, when Viserys eventually has a son, the court is startled that Rhaenyra continues to be treated as his heir, sowing the seeds of conflict across the kingdom.
