Swinging London in 1969. Ray Purbbs edits a 'underground' (that is, counterculture) magazine, Mouth, from his flat in Notting Hill Gate, with the help of his fellow hippies Alex, Jill, and Hugo. Ray is passionate about protest, ridiculously thrilled about every hip movement, and sure he is (or might be) a major actor in the war between the Establishment and alternative society. Alex is coolness personified, a man so laid-back that he appears to exist outside of reality, despite coming from a privileged upbringing and being more interested in golf than changing society. Jill welcomes all of the newfound freedoms allowed to her gender and claims to believe in free love, albeit this attitude does not extend to her 'lover,' Ray, who has long been deprived of her carnal interest. Hugo is spectacularly ambiguous, almost brilliant in his obliqueness. The quartet, led by Ray, jumps on every current bandwagon and completely fails to make any difference in anything they accomplish. The gang is quite bad at everything-in fact, they're not even particularly good at being hippies.
