Flikken was a popular Flemish-Belgian television series about a Ghent police department. The show premiered in 1999 and ended on April19, 2009. A group of six police officers worked together to investigate numerous crimes, both petty and organized. The show always tried to portray police work in a realistic manner, while personal turmoil was never far away. Only Mark Tijsmans and Ludo Hellinx appeared in all ten seasons, out of all the actors who appeared. The VRT created Flikken, which was broadcast on Eén in Belgium and TROS in the Netherlands. In Belgium and the Netherlands, flikken is quite popular. During the previous season, the show received extremely high ratings, with up to 1.8 million people. Every year, the VRT hosts the Flikkendag, a family day where audience members can meet the show's cast. There are numerous games, real-life police and other safety demonstrations, and singer performances. On April18,2009, a special farewell celebration was held in Ghent, where the cast and crew bid their goodbyes to the thousands of people who had gathered to watch the play on stage.
