Many of the show's situations are based on Romano, creator/producer Phil Rosenthal, and the writing staff's experiences. The show's principal characters are based on Romano and Rosenthal's families. In syndication, the show airs on TBS, TV Land, and local stations in most markets. From 2000 through2007, KingWorld handled off-network syndication and Warner Bros. handled overseas distribution. In2007, CBS took over King World's distribution. CBS solely has American syndication rights; HBO and Warner Bros. TV have supplementary rights.
