Custer

Custer, sometimes known as The Legend of Custer, is a 17-episode military-western television series that aired on ABC from September 6 to December27,1967, starring Wayne Maunder as then Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. During the American Civil War, Custer rose to the rank of major general, the youngest in the Union Army. After the war, he was reduced to the rank of Captain, but was reinstated in 1866 as a Lieutenant Colonel in charge of the Seventh Cavalry, stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. Many of the soldiers in the regiment were deserters, former Confederates, or even criminals. The series was canceled before the screenplay chronology would have reached the Little Big Horn River in southwestern Montana, where all died on June25,1876, in a Sioux Indian ambush. Custer's commanding commander, U.S. General Alfred H. Terry, who disapproved of Custer's long hair and most of his fighting strategy, was played by Robert F. Simon. Slim Pickens portrayed California Joe Milner, a scout. Michael Dante played Sioux Chief Crazy Horse. Former Confederate soldier Sergeant James Bustard was played by Peter Palmer. Captain Myles Keogh was portrayed by Grant Woods. Read Morgan, a former cavalry soldier on NBC's The Deputy, played a medicine man in the episode "Spirit Woman."
