Pete Young takes a risk for the first time – probably the only risk of his young life – when he applies for and is hired as a batboy for the New York Empires. His single mother, Lynne, has no idea what he's up to. He's always been the golden boy, while his rebellious elder sister, Betsy, has constantly been in trouble. Pete attends a strict Catholic high school and spends out with his best friend, Mike, who is hoping to capitalize on his friend's newfound success. Pete joins a new family on the job, which includes Conrad Dean, the team's captain and great third baseman and one of the boy's all-time idols, who plays the role of an older brother. Lou Russo, the Empires' territorial head batboy, and Carlos Tavares, a rookie who believes Pete is his good luck charm, are also in the clubhouse. Pete is overjoyed to be a member of his favorite team, but he must still juggle life at home and life in the big leagues while dealing with moral quandaries and curve balls.
