At the Crane Animal Hospital in New York City, a bustling veterinary clinic, where it frequently seems as though the patients are running the place, the comedic focus of the show is on Dr. George Coleman, an accomplished veterinarian who treats an impressive roster of famous animals as patients. George has an undeniable ability with animals of all types, with the exception of human beings, despite the unconventional manner in which he interacts with them. It has lately come to George's attention, much to his dismay, that his ex-girlfriend, Dorothy Crane, has acquired the family firm and is now serving as George's employer. Dorothy, who is quick-witted and ambitious, causes a commotion at the hospital as she brings order to the mayhem and comes into conflict with George's animal-friendly administration.
