Admiral Frank Beardsley returns to New London to lead the Coast Guard Academy, his final visit before assuming command of the Coast Guard. He is a widower with eight children, and he leads a caring but strict ship, complete with charts and salutes. The children want for a permanent residence. Helen North is a free spirit, a designer whose 10 children live in loving anarchy, punctuated by group hugs. Helen and Frank, high school sweethearts, re-discover each other during a reunion, and it's love at first sight. They marry right away. The issues begin when two groups of children, the free spirits and the regimented preppies, are forced to coexist. The feuding sides agree to collaborate to bring the marriage to an end.
