In a little Polish hamlet, Rebbe Mendel is a single father who teaches the ancient scripture of Judaism, the Talmud, to the boys. Although it is against the law for girls to study religious texts, he yet does so privately with his daughter, Yentl. A tremendous desire to learn more about her religion persists after the death of her father, so Yentl disguises herself as a man and joins a religious school, where she discovers love.
