Will Penny, an old cowboy, takes a job on a ranch that requires him to ride along the property line looking for trespassers or, worse, squatters. He finds that his cabin in the high mountains has been taken over by a woman whose guide to Oregon has left her and her son. He doesn't want to kick the mother and child out just as the cold mountain winter is starting, so he agrees to share the cabin with them until the spring thaw. But it's not just the snow that slowly melts; the lonely man and woman soon stop being angry with each other and start falling deeply in love.
