The story takes place in 1880s Hokkaido, Japan. Jubei Kamata (Ken Watanabe), an ally of the Edo shogunate administration, murders a large number of individuals. In Kyoto, he is well-known by his given name. Jubei vanishes just as the war at Goryoukaku is about to conclude. Ten years later, Jubei lives in relative serenity with his child. He is hardly able to support himself. Jubei had vowed to never pick up a sword again in order to protect his late wife's grave, but due to poverty, he is forced to. Jubei takes up the profession of bounty hunter.
