By the end of the month, Umberto Domenico Ferrari's landlady demands that he pay her 15,000-lire monthly rent or he and his tiny dog will be put out to scavenge for scraps on the street. Unfortunately, Umberto's money runs out just as he is being admitted into the hospital, so he has to give his beloved dog to the landlady's abandoned pregnant maid as a temporary substitute.
