Tristana
Tristana is a young Spanish woman who has been left in the care of Don Lope, a protective but poor aristocrat. Don sells his possessions to avoid manual labor and advocates for the rights of society's oppressed and dispossessed. He preys on Tristana, who abandons him when she falls in love with Horacio. She returns to Don Lope when she becomes ill, unable to commit to him. After losing her leg to cancer, he asks for her hand in marriage, and she agrees. She prefers to remain in a passionless union rather than face the harsh realities of a society that refuses to adapt to women's needs. Taken from Benito Perez Galdos's novel.
