It's no secret that Larry Donner, an author with a nasty ex-wife, leads a writing group where one of his students is fed up with his mother's control over him. A Hitchcock classic mirrors Owen's life so closely that he decides to put the idea into action and offer to kill Larry's ex-wife in exchange for Larry promising to kill Owen's mother. As soon as Owen's plan is revealed to Larry, it appears that Owen has already started the process.
