Leland Fitzgerald, a distant young man, is imprisoned for the death of a mentally handicapped youngster who also happened to be Becky's brother. Pearl Madison, a prison teacher, chooses to write about Leland's case while the community tries to deal with the killing. Meanwhile, others who have been affected by the tragedy, such as Becky and her sister Julie, must deal with their own issues.
