Conservatives attack Harrison MacWhite's Senate nomination hearing to become ambassador to Sarkan, a country in Southeast Asia where civil war threatens to disrupt the delicate peace. Despite his expertise, MacWhite only perceives a contrast between the US and Communism. He can't accept anti-American feeling as a desire for self-determination and nationalist sentiment. So he abandons his opposition leader pal Deong, refuses a foreman's request to hold down road construction, and pushes on. But at what cost to the nation and his friends?
