The plutocrat U.S. Bates takes his bratty son Eric to his department store during one of his annual visits and offers him everything in it as a gift. Eric opts for a black janitor whose pranks have made him giggle. Initially subjected to numerous indignities as Eric's "toy," the man gradually teaches the lonely child what it means to have and be a friend.
