Val spends the following 13 years working as Fabinho's nanny in So Paulo after leaving her daughter Jessica with relatives in Pernambuco. In spite of her financial security, she is haunted by the guilt of not having reared her own Jessica reappears in Fabinho's life just as his university admission examinations approach.
