The Sand Pebbles
Jake Holman, an engineer on the U.S.S. San Pablo, a gunboat assigned to guard a tributary of the Yangtze River in 1926 China, gets on board. On board the ship, he quickly clashed with the "rice-bowl" structure that runs it and the symbiotic relationship that exists between Chinese people and foreigners. In order to reach China Light Mission, the gunboat must crash through a river boom and rescue missionaries who have been trapped upstream.
