It is 1649, and Mazarin has commissioned the destitute D'Artagnan to locate the remaining musketeers: Mazarin fears mutiny, notably from the popular Beaufort, after Cromwell deposed the English king. Porthos, dissatisfied with wealth and desiring a title, signs on, but Aramis, an abbé, and Athos, a brawler raising an educated son, support Beaufort covertly. When the musketeers fail to prevent Beaufort's escape from jail, Mazarin dispatches them to London to rescue Charles I. They are also chased by Justine, Milady de Winter's vengeful daughter from twenty years ago. They must flee England, avoid Justine, serve the Queen, and ensure that Beauford's political reforms are implemented.
