Caroline and Lloyd are a married couple who are constantly at odds with each other, masters of crafting acid-tongued barbs at the expense of the other. Indeed, they are so obsessed with belittling each other that they never stop, even when threatened with a gun. Gus, a thief on the run from the cops, kidnaps the couple as an insurance policy, intending to use their house as a hideout. But their constant bickering proves more than Gus bargained for, forcing him to take on the unenviable role of peacemaker for the sake of his own sanity. To make matters worse for Gus, he learns that he has kidnapped the couple on the night of their big Christmas party, and the guests are already on their way. Gus attends the party, pretending to be the couple's marriage counselor in order not to leave Lloyd and Caroline alone. As the hostage crisis and marital tensions reach their inevitable conclusion, this naturally leads to a series of comic conundrums.
