Tara Maguire (Robin Wright), a young lady in her remote Irish hamlet in the 1950s, scandalizes her community by conceiving a child out of wedlock and refusing to reveal the father. Sergeant Hegarty, in particular, is enamored with her uncommon beauty (Albert Finney). The arrival of a dramatic company adds to the commotion, particularly when she falls in love with one of the "Playboys," Tom Casey (Aidan Quinn).
